So, if you started your journey to the Great Attractor at the time when the last dinosaur went extinct, you would still be on your way! - Speaking of the Milky Way, it’s about 100,000 light-years wide. This means the Great Attractor is over 2,000 times further away from us than the furthest point in our own galaxy!

The Incredible Pull of the Great Attractor

With a mass tens of thousands of times greater than the Milky Way’s, the Great Attractor has a strong gravitational pull. It’s attracting not just our galaxy, but also thousands of other galaxies in our local part of the universe, known as the Laniakea Supercluster.

  • Just imagine a super strong magnet pulling iron filings towards it. The Great Attractor’s pull is similar, but on a much, much larger scale. It’s pulling entire galaxies, including ours! - Despite its huge gravitational pull, we can’t see the Great Attractor directly.
